Solidariteit met aardwetenschappen VU

Wij spreken onze solidariteit uit met de 37 collega’s van de afdeling Aardwetenschappen aan de VU die geraakt gaan worden door de bezuinigingen. Deze onzalige ontwikkeling laat zien dat de pijn van de bezuinigingen een ieder van ons kan treffen. WOinActie benadrukt dat wij elkaar vasthouden in de strijd tegen de afbraak van het hoger onderwijs.

Het is overduidelijk dat het hoger onderwijs in Nederland onder hoge druk staat, met ontslagen bij Universiteit Twente, de Open Universiteit, aangekondigde herschikking van programma’s in verschillende andere steden, en nu deze klap in Amsterdam. Het heeft Minister tegen OCW Eppo Bruins in de afgelopen maanden niet mogen behagen om ook maar enigszins in gesprek te gaan met de sector waar hij verantwoordelijk voor is. Sterker nog, hij heeft steeds teruggegrepen op de “beslissingen van de coalitie” waarvan hij slechts een uitvoerende tak zou zijn. Ondanks hevig protest en sterke argumenten vanuit het hoger onderwijs helpt de minister zo mee om de anti-intellectualistische wind in ons land aan te wakkeren.

Door deze afbraak vanuit de overheid is te verwachten dat de laatste ontwikkelingen aan de VU niet het einde zullen zijn van deze kaalslag op het hoger onderwijs.

We express our solidarity with the 37 colleagues from the Department of Earth Sciences at VU University Amsterdam who are set to be affected by the upcoming budget cuts. This disastrous development shows that the pain of austerity can strike any of us. WOinActie emphasizes the importance of standing together in the fight against the ongoing dismantling of higher education.

It is abundantly clear that higher education in the Netherlands is under severe pressure—layoffs at the University of Twente and the Open University, announced program restructurings in several other cities, and now this blow in Amsterdam. Over the past months, the Minister against Education, Culture and Science, Eppo Bruins, has shown no interest in even engaging in dialogue with the very sector he is supposed to oversee. On the contrary, he keeps hiding behind “coalition decisions,” claiming he’s merely the executor. Despite fierce protests and well-founded arguments from within academia, the minister continues to fan the flames of anti-intellectualism in the Netherlands. 

Given the government’s ongoing withdrawal of support, there is every reason to fear that what’s happening at VU will not be the final chapter in this systematic dismantling of our higher education system.
