Statement n.a.v. opheffen Engelstalige bacheloropleiding Economics & Business Economics UU

WOinActie heeft met afgrijzen kennisgenomen van de plotselinge aankondiging van het College van Bestuur van de Universiteit Utrecht om de Engelstalige bacheloropleiding Economics & Business Economics per 2029 te stoppen.  Deze top-down beslissing gaat lijnrecht in tegen eerder gemaakte afspraken met de betreffende faculteit. Er is geen consultatie geweest, medewerkers noch medezeggenschap zijn geraadpleegd. Ook was de communicatie met direct betrokkenen volstrekt intransparant. WOinActie neemt afstand van deze ondemocratische en onfatsoenlijke gang van zaken. Zo ga je niet met onze collega’s om.

Ook inhoudelijk keurt WOinActie deze beslissing af. Het besluit valt in het kielzog van eerdere voorstellen rond ‘zelfregie’ die door UNL en de CvBs in april 2025 werden gepresenteerd in een poging de nu demissionaire regering tegemoet te komen. Destijds hebben wij al gewezen op de gevaarlijke precedentwerking van top-down beslissingen om specifieke opleidingen te treffen met een taalverbod. Dit is geen regie maar machtswillekeur. Na Psychologie wordt nu dus ook Economics & Business Economics getroffen. Ondertussen staan nergens harde afspraken dat hierna niet ook andere afdelingen of opleidingen worden aangepakt. 

WOinActie roept het CvB Utrecht op om onmiddellijk deze beslissing terug te draaien en te weigeren collega’s voor de bus te gooien in onzalige politieke deals. Wij roepen al onze collega’s op tot heldere solidariteit in woord en daad met onze collega’s in Utrecht. Tevens roepen wij UNL nogmaals op om niet langer een al geruime tijd demissionair minderheidskabinet tegemoet te komen met zinloze offers onder de noemer ‘zelfregie’. 

Dit besluit van het Utrechtse CvB is opnieuw een voorbeeld van extreme hiërarchie aan de Nederlandse universiteiten en het feitelijke gebrek aan democratie. Wij roepen alle collega's dan ook op om veel intensiever het gesprek te voeren over wat het betekent om als universiteit democratisch te functioneren.

WOinActie is appalled to learn of the sudden announcement by the Executive Board of Utrecht University that it will discontinue the English-language Bachelor's programme in Economics & Business Economics as of 2029. This top-down decision is in direct contradiction to previous agreements made with the faculty concerned. There has been no consultation, neither staff nor employee representatives have been consulted. Communication with those directly involved has also been completely non-transparent. WOinActie distances itself from this undemocratic and indecent course of action. This is no way to treat our colleagues.

WOinActie also rejects this decision in terms of its content. The decision follows on from earlier proposals on “self-regulation” presented by UNL and the Executive Boards in April 2025 in an attempt to accommodate the now outgoing government. At the time, we already pointed out the dangerous precedent set by top-down decisions to impose a language ban on specific programmes. This is not self-regulation but arbitrary power. After Psychology, Economics & Business Economics is now also affected. Meanwhile, there are no firm agreements that other departments or programmes will not be targeted next.

WOinActie calls on the Executive Board of Utrecht University to immediately reverse this decision and refuse to throw colleagues under the bus in ill-advised political deals. We call on all our colleagues to show clear solidarity in word and deed with our colleagues in Utrecht. We also call on UNL once again to stop accommodating a minority cabinet that has been in a caretaker capacity for some time now with pointless sacrifices under the banner of “self-governance”.

This decision by the Utrecht Executive Board is yet another example of the extreme hierarchy at Dutch universities and the de facto lack of democracy. We therefore call on all colleagues to engage in much more intensive discussion about what it means to function democratically as a university.
